Be Proud of Your Smile with a Smile Makeover!

Being embarrassed of your smile can have a serious impact on your confidence. Hiding your mouth when you laugh or avoiding being in photographs isn’t doing you any favors, so why not do something about it? We want everyone in the Kennewick, WA area to have smiles that they can be proud of; aren’t you tired of being ashamed of how you look?

If so, you might consider a Smile Makeover from your dentist and the team at Marineland Dental Care!

A Smile Makeover isn’t a single procedure; it’s more like a program of treatment that includes many procedures, and it will require a considerable investment of time on your part. Not everyone is right for a Smile Makeover: we’ve found that the most successful outcomes happen because the patient was willing to make the commitment to treatment! If the embarrassment caused by teeth that are discolored, cracked, fractured, or missing is a reality you’re tired of living through, then you have to be willing to put in the time!

What is a Smile Makeover?

A Smile Makeover is an elective series of cosmetic dental procedures (although depending on the actual health of your teeth, there may be procedures that aren’t cosmetic, but are needed to get your teeth in good enough condition that they can undergo cosmetic enhancement). Elective means just what it did in school: it’s something you don’t need, but you want. That doesn’t mean a smile makeover is a luxury though! If you have teeth that look unhealthy, they probably are unhealthy. A Smile Makeover is a way to address multiple problems with the condition of your teeth and oral health.

What Procedures Are Available?

In addition to the restorative, medically necessary procedures that will get your teeth in good enough shape to get a Smile Makeover, your dentist at Marineland Dental Care may recommend some of these procedures, depending upon your specific needs, as well as how far you are willing to go to get a better smile (and improved confidence!).

Tooth Colored Composite Fillings

Most people have fillings: while you might see people occasionally with gold fillings, the vast majority are made of a substance called silver amalgam. Silver amalgam has been used as a filling material for over 150 years, and on a purely functional level, it works fine: silver amalgam is strong enough to withstand the chewing and grinding that your teeth do when you eat.

Do you need to have your fillings replaced? In some cases, yes. Fillings can get old and worn out. If this happens, a space is created between the tooth and the filling. Food particles can get stuck in this space, and the tooth will begin to decay.

Today, you have a choice in how your fillings look. If you have gold fillings, we will replace those if you like their unique look. However, if you think that fillings are best when they can’t be seen, tooth colored composite fillings can do the job. Composite means that the fillings aren’t metallic, they’re made from a special kind of plastic resin. It’s just as durable as silver amalgam but with the added benefit that it can come in many shades to match the exact color of your natural teeth. The result is a new filling that protects your teeth from decay, but is virtually invisible!

Tooth Bonding

If your teeth have lost their color and gleam, and you want to get that white, bright smile back, we offer tooth bonding. Tooth bonding works to cover teeth that are no longer attractive. A resin (similar to the one used in tooth colored fillings) is applied to the surface of the teeth that need an upgrade. A light is used to “cure” the resin (just like drying glue), which bonds it to the tooth.

Porcelain Crowns and Bridges

If your teeth are severely damaged or missing, you might need what’s called a dental restoration: either a crown or a bridge. A crown is placed on the top of your tooth like a cap, protecting it from further damage and giving it structural strength. If you have a missing tooth, a bridge can address that. An artificial tooth is held in place by the bridge, which itself is anchored to the adjacent teeth with crowns.

Crowns and bridges are common; what isn’t so common are porcelain crowns and bridges. Normally, crowns and bridges are made of metal. Metal dental restorations are unattractive. In addition, metal can even cause an allergic reaction in some patients!

Porcelain crowns and bridges interact with light differently than metal, and they come in tooth-colored shades, creating a natural look that once again hides the presence of the restoration.

Veneers

Veneers are similar to tooth bonding, in that a material is placed on the surface of the tooth to cover unsightly stains, cracks, and fractures. Unlike tooth bonding, veneers are fabricated beforehand. Marineland Dental Care offers veneers in both composite resin and porcelain!

Why Do People Get Smile Makeovers?

Your smile says a lot about you before you can even speak. A smile that is attractive and natural looking has been shown in study after study to play a major role in how people perceive you. It’s a fact of life: you will be judged by your appearance, and when your teeth are a mess, it is negatively impacting your ability to live your fullest, most successful life. No matter how well you dress, or what kind of car you drive, if your teeth appear unhealthy, it affects people much differently. For instance, did you know that just looking at an attractive smile releases feel good chemicals in your brain’s reward center? Even more interesting is what happens after those chemicals are released: you smile back, causing the same reaction in the other person! The mutual release of “feel good” chemicals has been shown to be the foundation for human cooperation and trust. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to make a big sale, land a dream job, or even get a date with that special someone. No matter what else you do, if you don’t address the problems in your smile, you’re drastically reducing the likelihood of succeeding in those situations.

This all adds up to one thing: if your teeth are unattractive and unhealthy looking, people are less likely to like you and trust you, bottom line. Study after study in a range of fields has shown this to be true!
