When most people go to the dentist, it’s because they have something seriously wrong with their teeth that needs to be fixed, or they are trying to avoid a serious problem by taking advantage of our preventive dentistry options.

But sometimes, we get people in our Kennewick, WA who simply want to enhance the appearance of their smile! Whether you want to simply choose a cavity filling that will blend in with your natural teeth (to create a more aesthetically pleasing smile with no evidence that there was a cavity in the first place) or you are interested in a personalized Smile Makeover, Marineland Dental Care has the services and options to help you achieve your best, most attractive, most healthy smile.

Composite Fillings

Tooth decay is one of the most common health issues in the US; it is only second to the common cold in terms of the number of people who have experienced it at some point in their lives.

For 150 years, the standard option (indeed, the only option) for a cavity filing was silver amalgam. Silver amalgam is a time-tested material that is an effective fix for a cavity. However, silver amalgam’s primacy as a cavity filling material is at an end. Composite fillings are a more recent development, and thanks to advancements in materials science, composite fillings are now durable enough to withstand the extreme pressures created when you chew or grind food (previously, composite fillings had only been useful in certain teeth, usually those more near the front of the mouth that aren’t as involved in the chewing of food).

Composite fillings are made of a very durable, lightweight polymer resin (essentially, a type of plastic). From a cosmetic perspective, composite fillings are superior to silver amalgam because the composite can duplicate the natural color and shade of your teeth, creating the appearance of perfect teeth. Composite fillings can come in many shades to match your specific tooth-color (tooth-colored does not mean “gleaming white”, which would look artificial and therefore unattractive).

Composite fillings also require less drilling for placement (making the filling procedure more comfortable for you) and composite fillings actually stay in place better than silver amalgam because the polymer resin actually bonds to the interior of your tooth; silver amalgam on the other hand relies on the shape of the cavity to work properly.

Veneers and Dental Bonding

If your smile has been made less attractive by excess wear, stubborn stains that can’t be easily removed with standard whitening or bleaching treatments (such as those stains caused by certain medications), or other difficult to repair problems with the appearance of your teeth, veneers and dental bonding are a great way to address multiple problems with a single procedure.

Veneers at Marineland Dental Care

Veneers are a dental restoration (like a crown or bridge, for instance) that eliminates difficult to repair cosmetic problems with your teeth and prevents them from happening again. A veneer is a thin piece of material that is bonded to the front of your problem teeth to cover stains and other damage. The veneers at Marineland Dental Care are made of either a synthetic material (similar to Lumineers) or porcelain.

Why Porcelain?

Porcelain is extremely durable, is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth in appearance, and is even stain-resistant and hypoallergenic. Dentists the world over have long used porcelain in dental restorations (including veneers, crowns, and bridges). It is 2,000 year old technology that has not been matched by any synthetic material in terms of performance and aesthetic value.

Dental Bonding at Marineland Dental Care

Another cosmetic option that functions similarly to veneers is dental bonding. Dental bonding is a good option if you are looking to improve your smile while also maintaining the cost effectiveness of your treatment.

Dental bonding is also ideal if you are concerned (or your dentist is concerned) that you may not respond well to the necessary filing down of teeth for veneers (which does result in a negligible loss of enamel). Instead, your dentist will apply a dental composite resin (like the resin used for composite fillings) directly to the surface of your teeth. Like veneers, dental bonding effectively hides stubborn damage and stains. However, it doesn’t last as long and you will need to have your dental bonding re-done at some point (over time, the resin does wear off to a degree).

Smile Makeover

If you need multiple procedures, or if your cosmetic problems are so severe they are actually approaching being problematic for your oral health, you might consider a full Smile Makeover. A Smile Makeover is a custom-designed program of procedures; because people have different needs, no Smile Makeover is really ever the same between two individuals.

Smile Makeovers usually involve multiple procedures, so you will need multiple appointments over the course of a fairly lengthy period of time (depending on the type and number of procedures you need). While a Smile Makeover is intended to either repair flaws or enhance your smile’s appearance, it may involve reparative, therapeutic, or restorative treatments as well to get your teeth healthy enough to undergo specific treatments.
