Sugar can’t run, but it sure can hide.

If you’ve got a growing family, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Unless your children are in a miraculous minority of kids who hate sugar, you know how hard it can be to keep the sweet stuff out of their hands – and, of course, out of their mouths.

It just so happens that this month is National Children’s Dental Health month, and the theme is once again “Sugar Wars.” I’m sure at times it feels like you are waging a war with your children about when (and how much) sugar they can eat. And you don’t always feel like you’re winning.

Not an easy task, is it? Whether your kids are at school, at a friend’s house, or in their own room, it seems that sugar-laden foods like candy, soda, and highly processed meals have a way of finding them, and not the other way around.

If you can’t keep your kids sugar intake in check, then they could be at a much higher risk for developing cavities, obesity, and even type II diabetes.

I don’t have to tell you how serious those health issues can be. You know it, and I certainly know it: Having treated children for years, I have seen firsthand what too much sugar and not enough regular oral health care can do to your mouth.

If you think you can do everything on your own to protect the smile of your family, I’m sorry to tell you that you’re flat out wrong. There is no substitute for regular, professional oral health care from your Kennewick dentist.

Yet that doesn’t mean you’re entirely off the hook. Far from it.

Putting Your Foot Down

As the adult, it’s your responsibility to provide your children with healthy food. In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, however, you can opt for a shortcut or two when it comes to feeding the family.

Preparing healthy, home cooked meals is hard to pull off on a daily basis, especially if you have the demands of a career getting in the way – but that doesn’t mean that your only option is processed foods, either. In fact, not all processed foods are created equally, so I urge you to check the labels next time you go shopping and try to eliminate refined sugars and high fructose corn syrup as best you can. Those refined sugars, and the processed foods in which you can usually find them, are one of the biggest contributors to cavities in children and teenagers.

The sooner you do this, the sooner your children’s taste buds will return to “normal,” making it easier for them to appreciate food that doesn’t contain 1,000% of their daily sugar intake. By the time they’re teenagers, you won’t have to argue as much with them  when it comes to eating right because they’ll already know how.

Avoiding fast food and sodas is the best, surefire strategy when it comes to reducing or outright eliminating refined sugars from your children’s diet.

If you have especially young children, you should begin brushing with them right away. The sooner they develop important habits related to their dental hygiene, the less likely it is that they will be afraid of receiving professional treatment from a Kennewick dentist like me.

Speaking of me, the last major point that I want to make to you is that, no matter the age of your little (or big) ones, if they are not seeing a family dentist who can provide them with some of the best preventative care in Benton County, then they are not getting preventative care, period.

Their sugar habits will lead to cavities, and those cavities will lead to lost teeth, plain and simple.

Yet if you can control the sugar works at home, then I can pick up the rest of your slack. The alternatives aren’t pretty, nor are they cheap, so for the sake of your family and their precious little smiles, make the right choice and choose a Kennewick dentist who understands.

Kids feel right at home in my office, and they’ll get the best care available – but only if you help them get it.

To schedule an appointment to begin a lasting dental relationship, I can be reached at 509-591-0515. You can also request an appointment online through my website; whatever is easiest for you.

All I ask is that you keep the sugar in check at home, and give them the kind of care that only Marineland Dental Care can provide.
