You are the best person to keep an eye on things going on in your mouth. When you come in for an exam, we will be looking for things, too, but you might notice something in between visits that needs to be seen right away! Don’t hesitate to let us know if you see something out of the ordinary, and we can help you decide if you need to schedule an appointment, or wait until your next cleaning. Whichever we decide, you need to be on the lookout while brushing and flossing!
We perform an oral cancer check at each appointment, but there is a chance that you could catch something before it’s time for your next cleaning. As you know, the sooner you can address cancer, the better off you’ll be! Be looking for patches of discolored skin, crust, or sores that won’t go away. You might notice a part of your mouth that is numb or you might notice a part of your mouth that is very tender. Swelling and lumps are also cause for worry. If you notice something like this on your gums, lips, tongue, or cheeks, give us a call right away!
What Happens Next?
When you come in for an exam, we will check what’s going on in your mouth. If we feel like it’s something troublesome, we will get a biopsy and find out what’s going on. Depending on the results of the biopsy, we will proceed. Often, oral cancer is treated with chemotherapy or radiation. We will be there to help you keep your mouth healthy if you need to undergo treatment. If things come back clear, we’ll be there to celebrate with you!
Paying attention while you floss and brush is extremely important. We look to you for information regarding your mouth, and the most you can tell us, the better care we can give you! Contact us today to set up an appointment, and let us know how we can help you have a happier, healthier smile!
