The team at Marineland Dental Care would like to wish you and your family a happy and healthy new year.

To help you achieve that last goal, we have a few friendly “resolutions” that will keep your mouth as healthy as it can be. If you follow them, we’ll be as happy as we can be when we visit our dentist office in Kennewick.

We are happy whenever any patients visit us, especially for routine cleanings and exams. This gives us an opportunity to catch up on how you are doing, and it gives us an opportunity to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and strong.

Remember to brush and floss daily

In our previous blog, we reviewed the proper way to brush and floss. As a reminder, you should brush twice a day for two minutes every time. Gently scrub your teeth on each side to remove as much bacteria as you can.

Flossing daily will remove bacteria from the places your toothbrush can’t reach — between your teeth and between your teeth and gums.

The bacteria that cause plaque, which causes tooth decay and periodontal disease, live inside your mouth. That’s why it is important for you to make oral hygiene a part of your daily routine.

Quit using tobacco

We don’t know where to begin with tobacco. It’s bad for your health and awful for your mouth.

Tobacco use increases your risk of tooth decay, advanced gum disease, and oral cancer. If you should need gum disease treatment, your tobacco use may make your treatment more difficult, and it will increase the likelihood that your periodontal disease will come back.

Plus, the nicotine and tar in tobacco stain your teeth, and they give you bad breath.

If you have been a long-time tobacco user, we know it can be difficult. We also know the long-term benefits of quitting are worth the effort.

Face your fear of the dentist

By some estimates, 20 percent of the population is afraid of the dentist, and between a quarter and half of those people avoid the dentist completely.

That is not a good way to keep your teeth healthy. Even if you are brushing and flossing, you need professional cleaning by a hygienist every six months.

We understand that dental fear can make coming to our dentist office in Kennewick difficult. It may even be hard to pick up the phone to make an appointment.
