How often do you see your family doctor? If you’re like a lot of people it’s something you do at least once a year, especially as you get older. Now here’s the second question: how often do you see your dentist? Many people neglect regular dental care and only react to dental problems – are you one of them?

At Marineland Dental Care we want to ensure our patients have great dental health but it’s not possible to maintain great dental health without regular care! Just like an annual physical at the doctor’s office we want to see you for preventive dental care that plans for the future of your health.

Where Do Dental Problems Come From?

Almost all dental health problems are preventable and are caused by oral bacteria. That bacteria is responsible for infections of the teeth and gums that, if left untreated, can cause serious pain and damage.

But the good news is what we first mentioned: those conditions are preventable! The oral bacteria in your mouth exists in the form of plaque, the sticky white biofilm that develops on your teeth over time. Some of the strains of bacteria it contains metabolize sugars from the foods you eat and turn it into acid. That acid weakens and dissolves your teeth’s enamel and begins forming cavities. From there more bacteria move in and the process just continues on and on.

It’s a similar case with gum disease – bacteria gets under your gumline and once there it can’t be reached by brushing or flossing. This gives it a chance to multiply and infect your gums, teeth roots, and bone. Over time gum disease can even cause tooth loss!

These two conditions – gum disease and tooth decay – are the root of all the problems in your mouth. When you don’t get them treated they’ll cause tooth loss, pain, infection, and the potential for the spread of bacteria elsewhere in your body. That’s why prompt treatment is important!

Better yet, why not simply prevent those conditions from ever occurring in the first place?

Preventing Dental Disasters

Like we said, almost all of the dental health problems you could have are preventable. While some patients may have a higher potential of tooth decay or gum disease because of genetics or other things out of their control there still isn’t any reasons why they have to happen.

Our Kennewick dental team works hard to put patient education and preventive care at the center of our practice. We want to see you regularly so that we can establish a long record of your oral health and know when the littlest thing changes!

Regular exams involve a set of thorough images of your teeth and gums that help us get a good understanding of all aspects of your mouth. We also remove plaque that has built up in the hard-to-reach spots that brushing and flossing just can’t get. This gives you a fresh start every six months to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

We also use preventive treatments like fluoride to give you a boost in preventing cavities. Fluoride actually has the ability to rebuild enamel on your teeth and while you may not have cavities you’ve still definitely lost some enamel over the course of the six months between appointments!

Combined with other preventive treatments our exams and cleanings will leave you feeling good about your oral health and ready to meet the challenges of the next six months. We’ll also take the time to counsel you on your diet and answer any questions that you have about your health. We want you to be armed with the knowledge you need to make good oral care choices!
