Having great oral health is about much more than just having a clean mouth. Great oral health can lengthen your life and cut your risk of developing a serious condition like heart disease or cancer. While research is still fairly new in these areas, we hope that you will take the following information very seriously and realize that the way you care for your teeth today will definitely impact your overall health in the years to come.

Heart Disease – The link between heart disease and gum disease is widely known, but we don’t have a lot of information about what causes the link. Recent research has found a possible clue. When gums bleed, the bacteria causing gum disease gets into the bloodstream. It then clings to your blood platelets and causes clots. Those clots could lead to heart disease or a heart attack.

Pancreatic Cancer – The relationship between gum disease and cancer is very new, so there isn’t a lot of concrete theory behind the link, but researchers studying men have found that men who had gum disease at some point in life are 64% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. Something is definitely going on there!

Alzheimer’s Disease – Alzheimer’s research is always growing because the rates of Alzheimer’s are also growing. There is so much to learn! While comparing the brains of Alzheimer’s patients with the brains of those without, researchers discovered the bacteria p. gingivalis only in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. P. gingivalis is the same bacteria responsible for advanced gum disease.

As you can see from this information, we don’t have a lot of concrete cause and effect research to share with you, but it is very clear that gum disease has a major impact on the rest of your body. Do what you can to prevent gum disease by following a good oral hygiene routine and by setting up regular dental cleanings here in the office! Contact us today to get started. We can’t wait to see you!
