Today I have some information about one of the most versatile cosmetic treatment available in our office: dental veneers. You might know a few things about veneers, but I’m guessing you might not know the different ways veneers can rebuild a smile. Veneers are essentially tiny pieces of lifelike ceramic that mirror the look and function of your enamel — the outer layer of the tooth. Veneers cover up flaws. Here are a few things veneers can help with:
- Gapped teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Recessed teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Broken teeth
- Uneven teeth
- Stained teeth
- Stained teeth that do not respond to tooth whitening
Getting Dental Veneers
So, you see that the veneer can do a little of everything. To assume that a veneer is strictly cosmetic would be incorrect. It’s a cosmetic service that is also somewhat restorative in that it can repair damaged teeth. Getting a veneer or series of veneers is a simple two-step process.
We first prepare the tooth and then take an impression. We’ll wear a temporary veneer while your permanent veneer is being created. We offer both porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Porcelain veneers are incredibly lifelike and durable. We love using porcelain because it’s translucent much like the enamel of your tooth. Having porcelain veneers placed is permanent. Because we must prepare the tooth, this treatment is not reversible.
Composite veneers, however, often do not require the removal of enamel. The composite veneers are designed and then bonded to the tooth. With both sets of veneers, you’ll eat and drink whatever you want, and you’ll care for them just like you would any other tooth.
Veneers have a lifespan, but these restorations do not stain with age or exposure to things like coffee and tea — like your natural teeth.
Candidates for Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are a versatile, but they aren’t for everyone. First off, as you read above, the treatment is no reversible. To get veneers, you need to be free of dental decay, the tooth must be strong enough to support the restoration, and have a stable bite. Veneers also might work for people who need extensive orthodontic treatment or those who clench or grind their teeth.
