Dental Veneers: Below the Surface

How is your smile looking these days?

Is it bright and vibrant?

Does it dazzle the people you run into each day (and possibly give you a leg up in business, social, and even romantic relationships)?

Or is your smile in need of some “TLC” after years of neglect or misfortune?

We believe everyone in Kennewick, WA (and beyond) deserves a great smile. A smile that is looking the worse for wear can greatly benefit from veneers at Marineland Dental Care!

What are veneers?

Veneers are a cosmetic dental restoration. Veneers improve the look of your teeth, but they also serve to protect your teeth from further damage.

Why should I consider veneers?

Veneers are a great cosmetic option (even the best, for certain people) that will give your smile a considerable esthetic boost and give your teeth additional protection from damage.

Unlike other cosmetic dental procedures, veneers are non-invasive. This means that placing them requires no surgery, nor does it require the use of whitening gels or bleaches that can cause considerable irritation, especially to those with sensitive gums. Veneers are made of either porcelain or composite (a kind of plastic), and with good care can last anywhere from ten to thirty years!

Veneers can cover up a number of persistent problems in your smile’s appearance. Usually, these are issues that are not superficial; all teeth have some degree of discoloration or damage, but in the majority of cases they are either still generally healthy-looking, or the negative effect on their look is negligible.

This includes teeth that are:

  • Severely chipped, eroded, or showing signs of excessive wear
  • Severely misshapen, misaligned, uneven. or have gaps
  • Filled (to protect the tooth from cavities), but the fillings are old and unattractive
  • Deeply discolored by medication or fluorosis (teeth that have been overexposed to fluoride during childhood, which can cause considerable staining as well as other impacts on the appearance of the teeth), in addition to staining caused by a smoking habit or the regular consumption of certain foods or beverages (such as coffee, tea, wine, and highly acidic and juicy fruits)

Veneers are especially useful if you have tried to improve your smile through a teeth whitening or bleaching treatment but saw little or no results.

What can I expect during my procedure?

Veneers require no surgery to be placed. Your dentist will help you choose which type of veneer is best for you (composite or porcelain), and create a treatment plan especially for you.

First, a thin layer of the surface of the tooth is removed to prepare it for the veneer.

Next your dentist may directly install your veneers or indirectly install them, depending on your specific oral health needs and your goals where appearance is concerned. In a direct installation, your dentist will build a veneer directly onto the surface of your tooth (or teeth). Some veneers may need to be manufactured by a technician prior to the installation. This is an indirect installation. The completed veneer is bonded directly to the tooth using a form of dental cement.

Finally, the veneer is shaped and polished to create the best possible look while also blending in with your natural teeth (many shades of “tooth color” are possible with veneers).

How are composite and porcelain veneers different?

Composite veneers are made of a plastic resin that is designed to withstand the environment within the oral cavity (your mouth) and the forces involved in chewing, talking, and biting.

Porcelain veneers are better looking than composite veneers to a possibly noticeable degree. Porcelain generally matches the look of natural teeth better than composites do, and porcelain interacts with light differently from composites that make them look better.

Porcelain also has an advantage in that it is more resistant to staining.

Of the two materials, composite is usually the more affordable procedure. Your dentist will discuss with you all your options to make sure that you get the most possible value out of your “Dental Dollar” in addition to your very best smile.
