Getting Technical For Better Dental Care

Dental anxiety affects millions of people, including many of our patients at Marineland Dental Care.

Nevertheless, many people feel comfortable coming to our office. A big reason for that is we care about your comfort as well as you oral health.

Dental care doesn’t have to be clinical to be professional. Dr. Hadley and the rest of our team are concerned about your mental and emotional well-being whenever you come to visit.

At our dentist office, patients from Kennewick, WA, and the surrounding area know that we strive to make their dental care as compassionate and as pain-free as we possibly can.

Sedation Dentistry

Many patients who feel anxious about dental visits are grateful that we offer sedation dentistry.

If you are not familiar with dental sedation, it is uses medication to help patients relax. Before your appointment begins, you will take a pill. By the time you sit down in the dental chair, you will be feeling the effects of the medicine.

Many patient feels groggy and some fall asleep completely. In either case, you are unlikely to remember much about your treatment.

Since the effects can last for hours, it is extremely important that you make arrangements for a family member or friend to take you home when you are finished with your cleaning or other procedure.

Now, we don’t recommend sedation for every patient, but it is an excellent option for people with some specific concerns, such as:

  • People who have moderate to severe dental anxiety
  • People who have trouble getting numb from local anesthetic
  • People who have a sensitive gag reflex
  • People who are undergoing long or complicated dental procedures

This isn’t a complete list, but these are some of the more common reasons that people choose to try sedation dentistry.

When your medication wears off, you can feel glad knowing that you have received the dental care that you need to maintain your oral health.

Dental Technology

Sedation is just one of the ways we can make your dental visits more pleasant. We know that many people are concerned about pain, and we do everything that we can to make your treatments as pain-free as we can.

In addition to local anesthetic to numb teeth or soft tissues, we have incorporated technology into our practice as well.

Here are a few examples:

  • Laser Treatments

Dental lasers are remarkable. They have several advantages over scalpels.

Once upon a time, cutting into your gums was the preferred technique for removing gum tissue that had been damaged by periodontal disease.

In addition to the messy nature of cutting, it took more time for your gums to recover from the procedure. Often, patients needed stitches to close the cuts. And that meant returning to the dentist to have those stitches removed.

As we tell you about the dental laser, we think you will agree it’s a better option for periodontal treatments.

If you have gum disease, we want to removed the diseased tissue and save as much of the healthy tissue as we can. With a dental laser, we are able to “zap” the diseased tissue.

Since no cutting is involved, the procedure is much less messy. The laser also seals the healthy tissue, so no stitches are needed. This also speeds up the recovering process.

The laser also allows us to more precisely remove the diseased tissue while saving more healthy tissue.

  • Air Abrasion

Many people who don’t have dental anxiety in most circumstances will feel anxious if a dentist mentions “the drill.”

Drill are an effective tool for removing decay from teeth. That doesn’t mean they are comfortable, however.

If you have a fear of the drill, you won’t have to worry about it at our office. We use air abrasion instead. What is air abrasion?

Instead of a drill, we use air to push fine particles at the decay. This is more likely a tiny sandblaster that breaks the decay free from your tooth. We can then suction the particles and the decay out of your mouth.

This makes cavity treatments easier on you.

Dentistry Doesn’t Have To Be Painful

Unfortunately, movies and television often portray dentists in a bad light. At Marineland Dental Care and among the dentists we know, patient comfort is a high priority.
