Put Your Dental Fears Behind You With Dental Sedation

Dental anxiety is not uncommon. And it’s understandable, given that some people had negative dental experiences in their childhood or even the more recent past. But like many other fears, most people would like to put their dental anxiety behind them.

The caring staff and comfortable surroundings at our Kennewick, WA dentist office are enough to help many people overcome their dental anxieties. But if your anxiety is more like full-blown fear, using dental sedation can help you move from avoidance of dental treatment to acceptance – and maybe even appreciation!

To find out how sedation dentistry can help ease your dental anxiety, call Marineland Dental Care at 509-591-0515.

How Sedation Dentistry Can Help

There are many situations in which sedation dentistry is appropriate:

  • If you have a sensitive gag reflex, dental sedation can keep you from choking or gagging during your treatment.
  • Because dental sedation makes you somewhat unaware of your surroundings, it relieves anxiety triggered by the sights, smells, and sensations of the dentist office.
  • If you have a fear of needles, sedation helps you overcome it so that we can administer local anesthesia.
  • If you need a lengthy dental procedure, sedation can ensure you stay comfortable and relaxed the entire time.
  • If you need multiple procedures, sedation can often enable us to perform all of them during a single visit.
  • If you’re bothered by your memories of a bad dental experience, you’ll appreciate the amnesia-like effect of some forms of sedation.

Choose From Two Kinds Of Dental Sedation

Because we offer two kinds of dental sedation, you can choose your desired level of relaxation. Dr. Walter Hadley, a member of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, can help you determine which type of sedation will work best for you. No matter which type of dental sedation you choose, we’ll monitor you throughout your procedure.

The two kinds of dental sedation are:

  • Nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas”
  • Oral sedation, in the form of a pill you take before your appointment

In general, nitrous oxide offers a lighter level of sedation. In some cases, Dr. Hadley will recommend using both nitrous oxide and oral sedation. This enables us to provide a heavier sedative effect during your procedure without giving you more medication.

Nitrous Oxide Vs. Oral Sedation

Here we’ve provided some comparisons of our sedation options:

  • Sedative effect. Nitrous oxide gives you a feeling of mild euphoria. Depending on the type of oral sedative used, you may not remember much about your procedure.
  • How it is administered. We administer nitrous oxide through a small mask that covers your nose. With oral sedation, you take a pill at a time determined before your appointment.
  • Safety. Nitrous oxide is safe enough for children. We offer oral sedatives that have been in use for many years and have a proven low risk of side effects.
  • How you’ll feel afterward. You’ll recover quickly from nitrous oxide and be able to drive yourself home from our Kennewick, WA dentist office. You’ll likely feel groggy after oral sedation. You’ll need to arrange for a ride home.

The sedation we’re using is a fairly simple oral sedation that the patient takes before they come in and then if they need more they can take more here. We also generally use nitrous oxide which has been shown, with the two of them together, you get an additive effect and it’s a very nice way to gauge just how much sedation a patient needs to keep them comfortable without using a lot of medication.
