Your Sedation Options

Sedation dentistry has been around in one way or another for more than 160 years. As with many aspects of dentistry, our knowledge about this has improved, which is why this service is so effective for helping so many patients.

At Marineland Dental Care, we offer two kinds of dental sedation.

Oral sedation

This is as easy as taking a pill. In fact, that’s exactly how this kind of sedation works.

If you do choose this type of sedation, you must arrange for someone else to drive you to and from your appointment. The effects of oral sedation can last for hours.

It’s possible you may not remember much or any of your appointment when you are sedated. Even so, you will still receive the benefits from your dental care.

Nitrous oxide

You might know this by another name — laughing gas. When we said sedation dentistry has been around for at least 160 years, this is what we meant.

People have known about the relaxing and analgesic effects of nitrous oxide since the late 1700s. In the 1800s, dentists and doctors started putting this to use for the benefit of their patients.

We can use nitrous oxide by itself or in combination with oral sedation so you can receive a dental cleaning or other procedure.

How Sedation Helps

Earlier we mentioned that millions of people struggle with dental anxiety across the United States.

Even so, different people experience dental anxiety for different reasons. That’s also why sedation dentistry can be so effective. It can help different people in different ways.

Sedation can keep you pain-free.

Many people are fearful that their dental care will be painful. This may be because of previous experiences when they were younger. This may be because of a story they heard from someone else.

This may be because of something they saw on a TV show or a movie. (We promise we are nothing like Steve Martin’s character in Little Shop of Horrors.)

Sedation can put your mind at ease.

One of the key benefits of dental sedation is that it can help you relax both physically and mentally. This makes it easier for you to receive the dental care that you need.

It also helps the dental professional who is treating you. We never want our patients to feel uncomfortable.

Sedation can prevent you from gagging.

This is a concern for people who have a particularly sensitive gag reflex. This is another time when the relaxation benefits of sedation are helpful.

The same benefits that keep you from feeling pain can prevent you from feeling the sensation of gagging as well.

Sedation can help you forget your treatment.

As we mentioned earlier, you might not remember any of your treatment while you are sedated. We’ve learned that some patients consider this the biggest benefit of all.

If they can get a cleaning or a filling without the memory of how it took place, then they are much more willing to do so.

Sedation can help you get through a specific procedure.

Even patients who are comfortable with preventive dental care may feel some anxiety if they find out they need a root canal or something more complicated.

With dental sedation, they can remain pain-free and calm throughout their treatment. This might even help them finish the procedure in one trip to our office.
