Smile Like a Star with Veneers

When was the last time you noticed a celebrity with less-than-perfect choppers? (Okay, Steve Buscemi gets a pass.) It’s probably been a while. Aside from a few crusty holdouts, a straight, white, and dazzling smile is de rigueur for the Hollywood set.

So are almost all famous people genetically blessed with flawless smiles? Highly unlikely. Are their gorgeous grins due to regular preventive care and perhaps a few whitening treatments? Well, that may be the case for some.

But the next time you see a star on TV or in a magazine with that impossibly perfect megawatt smile, you can be fairly confident that you are seeing the magic of dental veneers at work.

Of course, you don’t have to be a movie star to achieve a smile like one. To book a consultation or find out more about our veneer options, call Marineland Dental Care of Kennewick, WA at 509-591-0515.

A Star-Studded History

It’s really no surprise that dental veneers are so popular with the celebrity set, considering their origins in Hollywood. That’s right, this popular dental procedure was created in the 1930s by California Dentist Dr. Charles Pincus.

Back in those days, not all movie stars’ teeth were close-up ready. So Dr. Pincus fashioned the first veneers to hide actors’ and actresses’ dental blemishes and flaws. Dr. Pincus’s creations were a bit more primitive than today’s lifelike options, but they did their job of making smiles shine on the silver screen. They were also temporary, adhered with dental cement and designed to last just the duration of filming.

It wasn’t until 1982 that advances in dental technology made fixed veneers possible — and therefore practical for the public at large. Researchers found that by etching porcelain with hydrofluoric acid, and using strong composite resins, it was possible to safely and permanently bond veneers to the teeth.

Today’s veneers are incredibly realistic — mimicking the qualities and characteristics of real tooth enamel. Dental veneers can last ten to twenty years or even longer, though their longevity depends on a number of factors. It is possible to chip or crack them, and sometimes the health of the tooth underneath may change. Your best bet for making them last a long time is to take good care of them and your overall oral health.

What Flaws Do Veneers Conceal?

The great thing about veneers is that in one procedure, you can cover a whole host of imperfections. If you have any of following complaints about your smile, you may be a good candidate for dental veneers.

  • Your teeth are stained or discolored. Certain types of blemishes tend not respond well to even professional whitening treatments — for example, discoloration due to decay, trauma, or certain types of medication. In these cases, dental veneers may be the best fix.
  • Your teeth are ground down, chipped, or broken.
  • Your teeth are mildly misaligned or crooked.
  • Your teeth have gaps between them that you’d like to close.
  • Your teeth are uneven or misshaped.
  • Your teeth have a visible old fillings you’d like to hide.

Types of Veneers

At Marineland Dental Care, we offer two types of dental veneers to transform your smile.

Composite veneers are the simplest and most affordable option. In this procedure, Dr. Hadley applies a composite resin (similar to the material used for fillings) directly to the teeth. He will then sculpt and shape it to achieve a natural-looking result.

Composite veneers are best for minor reshaping issues, and in cases where the patient doesn’t need to change a lot of teeth. Generally, the doctor will not need to remove as much enamel as with porcelain veneers, and the procedure is faster and less invasive.

Porcelain veneers are the gold standard for getting that brilliant Hollywood smile. Your veneers will be custom crafted at a lab to perfectly fit your mouth and desired color. They are thin, stain resistant, and designed to reflect light just like natural teeth.

Before your porcelain veneers are attached, Dr. Hadley will trim off a thin layer of tooth enamel to ensure a good fit. The teeth will be cleaned and etched before placement. The veneers will then be bonded to the teeth using a special cement.
