Un-“Masking” The History Of Veneers

Remember, if you can, way back to 1994. That was the year that a movie ruined the reputation of dental veneers: The Mask. Jim Carrey plays a green-faced version of the Greek trickster god Loki, and he also has massive teeth (there’s some movie trivia for you – Jim Carrey and Tom Hiddleston have played the same character)! For a long time that might have been true – veneers looked fake, were huge, and looked like chiclets!

The materials used to build old veneers were bulkier and weren’t matched to your natural teeth nearly as well as modern ones, and they just didn’t quite look like teeth! Thankfully modern materials are stronger, smaller, more customized to the individual wearer, and look just like real teeth. You’d be amazed at the quality!

Veneers have really come a long way since their invention. You might actually be surprised at where they came from: Hollywood!

The Early Days Of Cinema: 1928

Veneers started off on the silver screen when Dr. Charles Pincus created temporary ones for use by actors – they’re the original Hollywood smile! These early veneers were only worn for shooting and were then removed, so comfort and longevity weren’t important!

It wasn’t until 9 years later that Dr. Pincus would design temporary acrylic veneers for public use. These early veneers were anything but permanent – they were held in place using denture adhesive! Imagine wanting to spruce up your front teeth and needing to glue your veneers in at the beginning of the day – what a hassle!

A Big Advancement

In 1959 a major breakthrough in veneer, and most cosmetic dentistry, technology was the discovery of a process that allowed porcelain to be bound to etched tooth enamel. This meant that veneers could be made thinner and that they could be truly fixed in place!

Continued technological leaps have brought veneers from fake looking temporaries to the modern ones that are practically indistinguishable from your natural teeth! At Marineland Dental Care we use the most advanced porcelains to make amazing veneers!

Modern dental porcelains are able to mimic the translucent quality that natural teeth have, are super thin, and can last for years! If you’ve wanted an easy cosmetic solution but always thought veneers were off the table then you owe it to yourself to take another look!

Modern Veneers: What Can They Do?

There are a lot of possible reasons why you could want veneers, and we are able to craft ours to fulfill any of your needs, such as:

  • covering stained teeth
  • Reshaping teeth
  • whitening your smile
  • closing gaps between teeth
  • fixing crooked teeth

These are just some of the cosmetic issues that veneers can fix! The process of getting veneers involves the removal of an ultra-thin layer of your teeth’s enamel. Once all of the teeth that are going to get veneers have been altered we’ll take an impression of your mouth and attach temporary veneers.

The impression is used to design your veneers, which is done by hand in a dental lab. After a few weeks we’ll get them back and you’ll have a second appointment where we attach your veneers permanently!
