We Have Options For Replacing Your Old Gold Filling

When you come in for your routine cleaning and exam, we are looking at many things. We check the health of your gums and teeth, but we are also looking at old restorations that might be in need of some repairs. If you have old fillings, we want to check to make sure those fillings are still holding strong. When they aren’t, it’s time to consider replacing them with a new filling!

Through the years, dentists have used many materials to fill cavities in teeth. The idea behind a cavity is to remove decay, and replace the empty space with a material that will act like tooth enamel. Things like silver, gold, and amalgam were all trusted fillings because the material was so reliable. Now, we see these old fillings breaking down or leaking. The leaks are especially worrisome because bacteria can get inside your tooth, and there’s not really any way for us to remove it.

Replacing a Filling

If we notice wear and tear on your filling, we will recommend that it be removed. We have a few options for replacing it that will make your tooth a bit stronger, depending on the size of your filling. Small fillings can be replaced with composite material that will match the shade of your teeth and hold fast. Larger fillings may need an inlay or an onlay to custom-fill the space and seal the tooth against bacteria. Finally, a tooth that is too weak to hold another filling might be best suited with a dental crown, which will encase the entire tooth.

It’s time to replace your old, worn-out fillings with materials that will last longer and hold better. This all a routine part of your six month exam and cleaning. If you haven’t been in to see us in a while, it’s time to get back in the groove. Contact us today to set up an appointment. We are here to help you maintain your smile for years to come, so let’s get started today!
