When Periodontal Disease Goes Too Far

Periodontal disease is always at the front of our thought process when seeing patients. We know how prevalent it is, and we know how damaging it can be. The number one reason adults lose permanent teeth is gum disease. The problem is that most of the people who really need care for their gums are the people who avoid the dental office!

What begins as a subtle infection can lead to the loss of teeth. In the first stages of gum disease, even healthy patients don’t know there’s anything wrong. Symptoms noticeable to you, the patient, don’t appear until the infection is deep in your gums. If left untreated, the infection will continue to work it’s way down along the surface of the tooth root until it infects the bone structure. Patients are left with pockets of infection around their gums, loose teeth, and quite a bit of pain around their gums.

Treating Advanced Gum Disease

Many patients will wait until these advanced stages of gum disease before coming in to see us. At that point, we are left with only extensive treatment techniques. In order to treat advanced gum disease, we must remove the infection through a procedure called scaling and root planing. We use instruments to clear the bacteria from along your tooth root and then make the surface of your tooth smooth so that bacteria will be less able to hold on. We then clear the pockets of infection in your gums and place the gum tissue back around your tooth.

We would love if gum disease never progressed to the point of needing extensive gum disease treatment, but we see it all the time. Contact us today to set up an appointment for your next cleaning and exam. We can help you keep gum disease at bay by removing signs of infection. We can’t wait to help you have a happier, healthier smile!
