Air abrasion solves the dilemma of patients who have their reservations against the use of dental drills. It is a drill-less technique that acts like a small sandblaster that sprays off decayed portions in a person’s teeth. This hand piece blows a stream of particles and draws out the decay much like a dental drill, minus the shrill sound and sharp pain. Aside from getting rid of dental caries, it is commonly used to:

  • Remove small existing restorations
  • Prepare the tooth structure for the placement of fillings
  • Prepare the teeth dental bonding
  • Repair cracked, chipped, discolored teeth, fractured, worn or discolored teeth

This advanced technology is safe to use. Your dentist may ask you to wear protective eyewear to prevent irritation from the spray and a rubber dam or protective resin to protect your gums and nearby teeth.

Air abrasion is an alternative to conventional dental drills and provides the following benefits:

  • No sound, pressure, heat or vibration that will harm your soft mouth tissue
  • Removes less of your teeth unlike the standard drill
  • Reduces the risk of breaking the enamel
  • Provides maximum tooth strength
  • Reduces the need for anesthesia especially if the cavity is shallow
  • Shortens the treatment time compared with procedures that use a dental drill

The procedure is nearly painless. Although it may cause sensitivity in some patients, your Kennewick dentist can help you manage this through sedation dentistry.

It’s ideal for removing small cavities that cling to the surface of your teeth, but it’s not recommended for deep cavities. Your dentist will advise you whether air abrasion is the right treatment for your teeth or if you’ll need to use a dental drill coupled with a light sedative instead.
