Missing a tooth can be really detrimental to the health of your smile. Gaps in your teeth can lead to other problems with chewing, speaking, and feeling comfortable when you smile. A gap can also put you at a higher risk for bruxism, which is teeth grinding. You might find yourself wearing down or breaking your remaining teeth. It’s important to replace that missing tooth as soon as possible.
One possible solution for a missing tooth is a dental bridge. The idea behind a bridge is that we can place a false tooth in the space by attaching it to the healthy teeth surrounding the space. The result is a solution that looks great and will function very closely to that of a natural tooth. There are three main types of bridges, and we’ll find the bridge that works best for you and your smile situation.
The Bridge Solution
Depending on where the space is in your mouth, we will look to different types of bridges. The two most used are Maryland bonded and traditional bridges. The traditional bridge is two crowns with a pontic (false) tooth in the middle. Two healthy teeth on either side of the gap have to be prepared for crowns. A Maryland bonded bridge works the same way except that instead of crowns, the pontic is held in place with two metal wings that are bonded to healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
