Just as routine appointments are important to the health of your smile, routine evaluations of your self-care are important to improving the health of your smile. You need to make sure that you are doing all that you can to protect your teeth and gums, and the only way to check is to evaluate!

Let us show you what we mean. Today we will talk about what to look for in your own oral hygiene routine and what you can do to improve that routine so that your oral health also improves! Remember, no one is perfect!

What Are You Doing?

What are you currently doing for your smile. You know that routine care is important, but how do you measure up to what the American Dental Association recommends for healthy smiles?

Your hygiene routine is what you do at home to keep your teeth clean. It should include two sessions of brushing your teeth for at least two minutes each session. The ADA recommend spending thirty seconds on each quadrant of your mouth.

You should also be using floss at least once. The ADA recommends flossing BEFORE your evening brushing session. You might also choose to use a mouth rinse to remove additional bacteria.

Routine dental appointments are important for your health. You need a cleaning at least every six months. Some patients need to come in more often, but we can discuss that are your appointment.

You should also receive an exam at least once each year. We will take X-rays and images of your teeth to look for signs of trouble. This is also when we check for signs of oral cancer and other dental diseases that are highly treatable if caught early.

The things you put in your mouth affect the health of your mouth. Are you eating a balanced diet that includes the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to maintain healthy, strong teeth?

Consider cutting back on the amount of sugar you consume, and switch to water as your primary beverage of choice. This will protect your teeth from sugar and acids associated with other beverages like coffee and soda.

Is it Enough?

Once you’ve evaluated your current levels of care, you have to ask yourself if you are doing enough for your teeth. Were there areas that you know you need to improve? The next step is to make a plan to change things up.

Areas for Improvement
Often, our patients find that they aren’t doing enough in the area of daily hygiene. Maybe you aren’t flossing at all. Maybe you only brush once each day. Maybe you sip soda throughout every workday. These are all areas for improvement!
